We ask Gary Wilkinson the following questions

Why should banks focus on SME Banking?

After years of mainstream banks failing their business clients, the industry should focus entirely on SME customers, and deliver a transparent and dynamic service.

Should banks reconcile themselves to being players in the new ecosystem rather than drivers of SME lending?

Banks need to step up and lead in the SME Lending sector, by offering real alternative options for small and medium sized organisations, making sure that their properties (as security) and cash work harder for them.

What potential do you see for Open Banking and PSD2 (and its equivalents in other regions) to drive new possibilities for SME banking?

Banks that lend to SMEs will be able to utilise Open Banking platforms in their underwriting processes, providing platforms, via APIs, which will provide real time access to transaction data from other UK banks and so will greatly streamline the underwriting process for many banks.
